Ethereum Name Service (ENS) translates human-readable names like 'alice.eth' into machine-readable identifiers on the Ethereum blockchain. Instead of copying long wallet addresses, you use a simple domain name to send and receive crypto. ENS maps to Ethereum addresses, other blockchain addresses, content hashes, and metadata — all stored on-chain. The system works hierarchically, similar to internet DNS. Domain owners control their own subdomains and can manage the metadata associated with their names. ENS also supports reverse resolution, letting you attach canonical names or interface descriptions back to Ethereum addresses. This two-way mapping creates a more user-friendly layer on top of the blockchain while keeping the infrastructure decentralized and open. You own your ENS domain outright once registered.
