UMA is a decentralized platform for financial contracts designed around Universal Market Access. It solves a core problem in DeFi by building what it calls "priceless" contracts — smart contracts that operate with minimal reliance on oracles. This approach cuts through many security and scalability constraints that have held back decentralized finance infrastructure. The platform's first use case centers on synthetic tokens built as ERC20s. These track real-world or digital assets without constantly pulling on-chain price data, reducing the attack surface and operational overhead traditional oracle solutions require. When price verification does become necessary, the network handles it through a decentralized mechanism. UMA tokens serve two functions in the system. Token holders participate in governance over what contract types the platform supports, which assets can be tracked, and how core parameters evolve. The token also secures the price-feed mechanism itself when disputes arise, incentivizing honest participation in the validation process.
